Yes, it's yet another John Peel tape blog...

"John Peel's the most important DJ of all time"
-- Jack White

Following dubster's recent decision to take a sabbatical from posting up old Peel shows, I thought I'd give it a go myself. So, let's kick off with the 1983 Festive 50. You may have missed this one, as it was one of the last things dubster posted up.

Part 1: 50 to 28 (128K, 95Mb, 01:43:50)

Part 2: 27 to 1 (128K, 115Mb, 02:06:16)

Tracklisting

More to follow, and if you've any old Peel shows yourself, let me know and I'll post 'em up.

Nice one! And I'll second that request for the lost-in-a-box stuff. Keep up the good work!

I had every Peel show between late 2002 and mid '04 in 192 kbs, in their entirety, gigabytes upon gigabytes worth, but lost them when a hard drive failed. I think it's the single greatest loss I've encountered in my life, barring the passing of loved ones. I lost them prior to JP's passing, so the loss is that much more painful. I was mentioned by JP during the 3/25/03 show, with regard to how Magoo sent me a CD of theirs because I didn't have a record player to play their at-that-time only available on LP version of Expansion Ride. I shamelessly wish I had that show most of all, and would die happy it anyone that by some lucky chance has it could post it. I wish I had my recordings because I would happily contribute instead of just ask others for past shows. Anyway, Cheers. -RB

RB - what a nightmare! I live in fear of something like that happening to me before I've properly backed up all my Peel stuff.

However, re the 25th. May '03 show - I have that one (Knifehandchop session). Will put it up this weekend for you!

duffpaddy,

I honestly can't believe it... Thank you so much! You've made a total stranger very very happy so there's dumptruck loads of good karma heading your way, so be prepared when it hits. JP would highly approve methinks!

That Knifehandchop mix was amazing. I didn't get tickets in time for his show in Denver,CO so it's an added bonus for you to post it. Do you know what's sad? I even sent Knifehandchop an e-mail to see if he happened to have that show of his on CD somewhere. I haven't heard back from him. :)

Man, thanks again. I hope others enjoy that show. Woopie!!

sorry to use you so blatantly but I hope you don't mind posting the following.....

I am someone who grew up listening to John Peel. He informed my musical being.

Now I have grown up (and some) I am a photographer and I'm currently making a book about fellow Peel fans. Well, not the actual fans, but their tapes. The tapes that they recorded from Peel shows. Tapes of sessions, shows and festive fifties.

I came up with the idea after re-finding my collection of festive fifty tapes. It is sad but I had stashed them away as redundant (stereo 'upgrade' left me without tape deck). It is unlikely I will play the tapes ever again as I have now sourced mp3 versions to fuel my i-pod. However, tapes hold an aesthetic appeal to me and I want to document this form of technology before people start to dispose of it.

Although physical cassettes are all very similar the content and labelling are unique to each tape.

The book will be very simple - images of tapes, maybe some text about the owner and the content of the tape.

I am writing to appeal for tapes. For this project to work I need lots of tapes to photograph. I am hoping that each 'home taper' will be prepared to lend me one of their favourite Peel tapes. For it to work I need to photograph each tape in an identical manner. I will need to borrow the physical tape to photograph in controlled conditions in my studio.

I can assure you that I will respect the irreplaceable nature of your tape; I will be very careful. If you are a willing participant then I will send you a stamped addressed, recorded delivery, waterproof envelope, for you to send me the tape. Once I have photographed it I will return it in the same manner, without delay.

As well as taking the form of a book this project will be exhibited in London in July. Any participants will get to see their tape featured in a variety of different mediums. I can also assure you of anonymity if desired.

If you are interested please email me at martynbaldock@hotmail.com and I will be really chuffed to advise you accordingly.

Best Wishes

First let me say what a great job all you JP blogger's are doing.

As one who grew up on JP in the late 70s and early 80s, there is always something special about hearing him link the records rather than just playing the songs myself. Never is that more true than during the festive fifty, even in years when the records were neither his favorites nor mine.

So it seems a real impertinance to ask a favor but it seems that part 1 of the 1983 festive fifty is no longer on rapidshare. Any chance of reposting it there or elsehere?

Here's hoping - looking forward to all the other great future JP posts.

Best Wishes,
